Castle District

Matthias Church : a 700 year-old gothic coronation church.

Royal Palace : originally a fortress erected in the 13 th c., it was rebuilt as a magnificent residence for the monarchy in the 19 th c. and now houses the National Gallery with a large collection of Hungarian works of fine arts.

Fisherman's bastion: built in the 1903 offering splendid views of the city.

Gellért Hill: named after the Venetian bishop who came to Hungary in the 11 th c. to convert Hungarians to Christianity. His statue stands in the exact spot from where the pagans thrust him in the river Danube . It is the best place to enjoy the panorama of the city with the bridges spanning the river. You can also find a fortress called Citadel on the top of the hill built in 1851.

Parliament: the seat of the Hungarian government situated by the river Danube built between 1885-1905.

St. Stephen's Basilica: an ecclesiastic basilica named in honour of Stephen , the first King of Hungary (c. 975 - 1038 ), whose mummified fist is housed in the reliquary .

Heroes' Square: with the Millenary Monument to commemorate the 1000 th anniversary of the founding of Hungary . The square is surrounded by a colonnade with statues of great rulers and leaders of Hungarian history.

Museum of Fine Arts : painting, sculpture and graphic collection by European masters.

City Park : with the Zoo and Botanical Gardens, Theme Park and Municipal Grand Circus.
